Erick “Tower” Mathoho is one of few defenders with the ability to adjust to playing with different central partners in the heart of defence. The Kaizer Chiefs star performed extremely well last campaign as they won the league title with only 14 goals conceded throughout the campaign. Mathoho partnered Tefu Mashamaite in most of the 23 matches he started last campaign. The two defenders received high praises for their chemistry and defending abilities.

However, Mathoho was forced to adjust to playing alongside a new player following Mashamaite’s departure for greener pastures. The changing of central defenders doesn’t seem to have affected Mathoho’s game that much. Despite his club already conceding more goals than last campaign, the Limpopo born star has been a regular and remains as one of the key players in the Amakhosi set-up. Mathoho has started scoring vital goals for the team as well.

Tower is one of the best man-markers in the league, his positional play, interceptions and understanding of the beautiful game makes him one of the hardest defenders to beat in the league. Mathoho brings stability and leadership to any defence pairing both at club level and international level. The Kaizer Chiefs’ star understanding of the game and dedication is evident for everyone to see in the way he plays and conducts himself on the field.

The talented defender has shown great understanding of his teammates as well, Mathoho has excelled alongside Siyanda Xulu, Morgan Gould and Lorenzo Gordinho in recent months in the league. While at international level, the partnership between him and young Rivaldo Coetzee has been praised by many including legendary former Bafana Bafana skipper Lucas Radebe. The duo inspired South Africa to qualify for the 2015 AFCON.

Mathoho and Coetzee have been playing together regularly since coach Shakes Mashaba took over at Bafana Bafana. Being the older of the two, Mathoho has taken the responsibility of a leader in the national team. The experienced defender is one of few players that every coach wishes to have in their team as he combines well with his fellow defenders and you can trust him to perform to the best of his abilities in every match he features on.
